After extensive research using Doppler radar technology, Hornady found that the high heat caused by the friction of the air running over the tips of a bullet was actually melting polymer tips designed to increase aerodynamic efficiency. To prevent this from disturbing the bullet's flight, Hornady developed its new Precision Hunter lineup complete with a ELD-X bullet and a Heat Shield tip.

Designed to resist the intense, friction-created heat of ballistic travel, the Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X Heat Shield tip retains its shape throughout travel, providing one of the highest ballistic coefficients of any hunting bullet in its class. Inside of 400 yards, the high velocity of the round allows for continuous expansion as it penetrates through game cavities, providing 50-60 percent weight-retention.
